This is a scholarly essay that examines the Divan of Hafez Shirazi as a literary text shaped by the social and historical conditions of the eighth century of the Islamic calendar. Drawing on New Historicist approaches alongside descriptive and analytical methods, the essay investigates how the Divan relates to various social groups and forces of its time, exploring the ways those groups are reinforced, marginalized, or excluded within the process of literary production. The work argues that the Divan cannot be read apart from the broader traditions, discourses, and social currents that surrounded its creation.
