The book presents a series of interpretive readings of the "Römische Elegien", "Sonette", "Chinesisch-deutsche Jarhes- und Tageszeiten", several trilogies, and the shorter cycles of 1821, taking into account the variety of literary devices Goethe employs to link poems together into a cycle. The author examines Goethe's role in the history of the lyric cycle and, in stressing structural design, urges a reevaluation of the cycle's emergence as a standard poetic device.
این کتاب پژوهشی است دربارهی شعر گوته، با تمرکز بر شکل «چرخهی غنایی» (lyric cycle) در آثار او. نویسنده به بررسی و تفسیر مجموعههایی چون «المانهای رومی»، «سونتها»، «فصلها و ساعتهای چینی-آلمانی»، چند سهگانه و چرخههای کوتاهتر ۱۸۲۱ میپردازد و نشان میدهد گوته چگونه با ابزارهای ادبی گوناگون، شعرها را به هم پیوند میزند تا یک کل منسجم بسازد. هدف اصلی کتاب ارزیابی دوبارهی جایگاه گوته در تاریخ این قالب شعری و نشان دادن اهمیت ساختار در شکلگیری چرخهی غنایی بهعنوان یک شیوهی رایج در شعر است.
