Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups
When auteur cinema walks into the territory of stars

Geetu Mohandas's new film has not reached the screen yet, and that wait may be the best reason to introduce it this week. Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups is set to open on August 26, 2026, a large, star-driven film from South Indian cinema built around Yash, the star of the KGF series. What separates Toxic from one more expensive production is, above all, the name of its director.
Geetu Mohandas built her career in an entirely different cinema. Liar's Dice, her best-known film, was a quiet social drama about migration, poverty and loneliness. It played at Sundance and Rotterdam, won two National Film Awards, and was chosen as India's entry for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Moothon showed the same thing again: she is drawn less to great heroes than to people left at the margins. Now that filmmaker has taken charge of a project built on star power, violence, gangsters and enormous scale.
That shift has created the central question about Toxic before anyone has seen it: when a filmmaker who comes out of independent cinema walks into the machinery of commercial cinema, which one changes the other?
The film is a period gangster drama, and much of its world takes shape in Goa. Yash plays two roles, Raya and his son Romy, who is also called Ticket, and the trailer points to a conflict between father and son. Nayanthara, Kiara Advani, Huma Qureshi, Tara Sutaria and Rukmini Vasanth are also in the cast. About the details of the story it is still better to be careful. What has been put in front of the audience so far is above all a picture of a violent, glittering, dark world, a long way from the silence and the realism of Mohandas's earlier work.
The release was pushed back three times. It was first set for April 2025, then for March 19, 2026, and finally for August 26. KVN and Monster Mind said in a statement that they moved the date in response to the conflict in the Middle East, since that region is an important market for expensive South Indian films. Three views before release
No review of the film has been published yet. What exists is a response to the teaser, from January 2026, seven months before the full trailer came out on August 8. So this time, instead of three reviews, we put three views side by side.
Where does Geetu Mohandas stand in this film?
Anas Arif in The Indian Express, on January 9, 2026, puts his central question not to Yash but to Mohandas herself. Recalling her earlier cinema, he asks whether, among the violence and the display of power and eroticism in the teaser, the filmmaker of Liar's Dice and Moothon can still be recognized. The underlying worry is that the dominant language of commercial Indian cinema has become so powerful that even a filmmaker with a world of her own is compelled to speak it.
Masculinity, violence and shock value
Hindustan Times is harsher. In its account, Yash's character has so far moved little beyond the familiar template of the powerful, violent man of commercial cinema, and what has been shown of the film leans above all on shock value. From this angle the question is no longer only Mohandas's identity, but the kind of masculinity the film has decided to place at the center of its picture.
An Indian film for a larger market
Variety is not a review but an interview and an industry analysis. Here Yash speaks about Toxic, about working with Mohandas, and about Indian cinema's movement toward a global market. Seen this way, the film is a test of whether the energy and scale of popular Indian cinema can be combined with the sensibility of an auteur, and produce something that works at home and can also be read by an audience beyond India's borders.
These three views speak about a film they have not seen, and the first two had not even seen the full trailer. That should be preserved in our judgment too. A trailer can show the tone of a film, introduce its cast and build expectation, but it is not yet the film.
For now the importance of Toxic lies in these questions. Has Geetu Mohandas managed to keep her own language inside an enormous production?

فیلم تازهٔ گیتو موهانداس هنوز به پرده نرسیده اما شاید همین انتظار بهترین دلیل برای معرفی آن در این هفته باشد. Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups قرار است ۲۶ اوت ۲۰۲۶ اکران شود؛ فیلمی بزرگ و ستارهمحور از سینمای جنوب هند که در مرکز آن یاش، ستارهٔ مجموعهٔ KGF، ایستاده است. با این همه آنچه Toxic را از یک محصول پرهزینهٔ دیگر جدا میکند بیش از هر چیز نام کارگردانش است.
گیتو موهانداس مسیرش را در سینمایی کاملاً متفاوت ساخته است. Liar's Dice، از شناختهشدهترین آثار او، فیلمی کمصدا و اجتماعی دربارهٔ مهاجرت، فقر و تنهایی بود، در ساندنس و روتردام نمایش داده شد، دو جایزهٔ ملی گرفت و بهعنوان نمایندهٔ هند برای اسکار فیلم خارجیزبان انتخاب شد. Moothon نیز نشان داد که علاقهٔ او بیش از نمایش قهرمانان بزرگ به آدمهایی است که در حاشیه ماندهاند. حالا همان فیلمساز هدایت پروژهای را بر عهده گرفته که بر قدرت ستاره، خشونت، گانگسترها و ابعاد عظیم تولید بنا شده است.
همین جابهجایی پرسش اصلی Toxic را پیش از اکران ساخته است: وقتی یک فیلمساز برخاسته از سینمای مستقل وارد دستگاه عظیم سینمای تجاری میشود، کدامیک دیگری را تغییر میدهد؟
فیلم یک درام گانگستری دورهای است و بخش مهمی از جهان آن در گوا شکل میگیرد. یاش در این فیلم دو نقش دارد، رایا و پسرش رومی که تیکت هم صدایش میکنند، و تریلر از درگیریای میان پدر و پسر خبر میدهد. نایانتارا، کیارا ادوانی، هما قریشی، تارا سوتاریا و روکْمینی واسانت نیز در جمع بازیگران حضور دارند. اما دربارهٔ جزئیات داستان هنوز بهتر است محتاط بود. آنچه تا امروز در اختیار تماشاگر قرار گرفته بیش از هر چیز تصویری از جهانی خشن، پرزرقوبرق و تیره است؛ جهانی که فاصلهٔ زیادی با سکوت و واقعگرایی آثار پیشین موهانداس دارد.
اکران این فیلم سه بار عقب افتاد. نخست قرار بود آوریل ۲۰۲۵ باشد، بعد نوزدهم مارس ۲۰۲۶، و سرانجام بیستوششم اوت. KVN و مانستر مایند در بیانیهای گفتند تاریخ اکران را در واکنش به درگیری خاورمیانه جابهجا کردهاند، چون بازار آن منطقه برای فیلمهای پرخرج جنوب هند بازار مهمی است. گزارش ددلاین.
سه نگاه پیش از اکران
هنوز نقدی از فیلم منتشر نشده است. آنچه در دست است واکنش به تیزر است، از ژانویهٔ ۲۰۲۶، هفت ماه پیش از آنکه تریلر کامل در هشتم اوت بیرون بیاید. پس اینبار به جای سه نقد، سه نگاه را کنار هم میگذاریم.
گیتو موهانداس کجای این فیلم ایستاده است؟
انس عارف در ایندین اکسپرس، نهم ژانویهٔ ۲۰۲۶، مهمترین پرسش را نه دربارهٔ یاش که دربارهٔ خود موهانداس میپرسد. با یادآوری سینمای پیشین او، پرسش این است که آیا در میان تصاویر خشن و نمایش قدرت و اروتیسم تیزر، هنوز میتوان فیلمساز Liar's Dice و Moothon را شناخت. نگرانی اصلی این است که زبان مسلط سینمای تجاری امروز هند چنان قدرتمند شده باشد که حتی فیلمسازی با جهان شخصی او هم ناچار به سخن گفتن با همان زبان شود.
مردانگی، خشونت و ارزش شوک
هیندوستان تایمز سختگیرانهتر است. به گفتهٔ این نوشته، شخصیت یاش تا اینجا چندان از همان الگوی آشنای مرد قدرتمند و خشن سینمای تجاری فاصله نگرفته و آنچه از فیلم دیده شده بیش از هر چیز بر ارزش شوک تکیه دارد. از این زاویه مسئله دیگر فقط هویت موهانداس نیست، بلکه نوع مردانگیای است که فیلم تصمیم گرفته در مرکز تصویر خود قرار دهد.
یک فیلم هندی برای بازاری بزرگتر
ورایتی نقد نیست، مصاحبه و تحلیل صنعتی است. اینجا یاش دربارهٔ Toxic، همکاری با موهانداس و حرکت سینمای هند به سوی بازار جهانی حرف میزند. از این منظر فیلم آزمایشی است برای اینکه آیا میتوان انرژی و مقیاس سینمای عامهپسند هند را با حساسیت فیلمسازی مؤلف درآمیخت و محصولی ساخت که هم در بازار داخلی کار کند و هم برای مخاطبی فراتر از مرزهای هند قابل خواندن باشد.
این سه نگاه دربارهٔ فیلمی سخن میگویند که ندیدهاند، و دو تای اول حتی تریلر کامل را هم ندیده بودند. همین باید در قضاوت ما نیز محفوظ بماند. تریلر میتواند لحن یک فیلم را نشان دهد، بازیگرانش را معرفی کند و انتظار بسازد اما هنوز خود فیلم نیست.
اهمیت Toxic فعلاً در همین پرسشهاست. آیا گیتو موهانداس توانسته زبان شخصی خود را در دل یک تولید عظیم حفظ کند؟ آیا یاش از همان شمایل آشنای قهرمان خشن KGF فاصله خواهد گرفت؟ و آیا پیوند سینمای مؤلف با ماشین ستارهسازی هند به چیزی تازه منتهی میشود یا یکی سرانجام دیگری را در خود حل میکند؟
Toxic بیستوششم اوت روی پرده میرود. اورنگ نیز تا آن زمان قضاوت را نگه میدارد. فیلم را باید دید؛ بعد میتوان برگشت و سنجید که پشت این همه انتظار و جنجال، واقعاً چه چیزی ساخته شده است.
