The Mythmaker
He spins his myths, and it seems
that Victory sits upright, watching,
a smile of rapture upon its lips,
its hair surrendered to the wind,
a vast chimera in its mind.
Lost in his own imaginings,
he believes
that he can turn that which exists only in his mind
into that which exists.
And the mind, if not alive and changing,
becomes a heavier chain
across this path.
The mythmaker
takes doubt for a fall.
He does not see
those awakened from dreams of delusion,
who, with the banner of doubt unfurled,
have raised their discordant voices.
Though their echoes sound strange today,
they will be familiar
in a time to come.
*
As time rushes on
so hastily,
long since
for me and for him alike
the season of unthinking fervor
has come to an end.
And reflection on what we have done
is the final full stop
to our chronicles of mourning.
Otherwise,
grief has no end.
