Anne Carson: The Poet Who Crossed the Borders of Literature

The 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature goes to a poet who teaches the literature of ancient Greece

By Owrang Editorial

On Thursday, October 8, the Swedish Academy gave the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature to Anne Carson. Its citation praises a "bold and inventive" body of work that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has made new forms for contemporary literature. Carson is 76 and the third Canadian to receive the prize, after Saul Bellow and Alice Munro. It will be presented in Stockholm on December 10.

For years her books carried a single line about the author. Anne Carson was born in Canada and teaches ancient Greek for a living. There is no author photograph on the jacket. Publishers Weekly reports that she does not read her reviews and has said she wants a book with nothing on it but the book. That dry line is the key to her work. Carson is a poet whose command of language has gained a new depth from reading scraps of papyrus and weighing the meaning of words in half-lost lines.

Her first book, "Eros the Bittersweet", published in 1986, was an academic study. It begins with one word from Sappho, an adjective the Greek poet coined for love that means "sweetbitter". Carson asks why sweet comes first. Out of that small question grows a book about desire, and about why love always has three points: the lover, the beloved and the distance between them.

Twelve years later "Autobiography of Red" took her beyond the university. Stesichorus, a Greek poet of the sixth century BC, wrote a long poem about Geryon, the red, winged monster whom Herakles kills in his tenth labor before driving off his cattle. Only fragments of it survive. Carson took those fragments and wrote a novel in verse. Her Geryon is a red, winged boy of our own time who takes photographs and falls in love with a young man named Herakles, who breaks his heart. According to Publishers Weekly, the book has sold nearly 100,000 copies in the United States, a rare figure for poetry.

Why would a writer at the end of the twentieth century go back to a text more than two and a half thousand years old? Carson's answer is that the text is not finished. One complete poem by Sappho survives, and the rest is pieces. Of Stesichorus there is less. Carson does not treat the gaps as damage. She treats them as part of the text. In "If Not, Winter", her translation of Sappho, she sets a bracket wherever the papyrus is torn and leaves the page white. The reader takes in the poem together with its absence.

That way of seeing changed the shape of the book itself. "Nox", published in 2010, is an elegy for her brother, a man long estranged from the family who died in Copenhagen. The book has no binding. It is one long strip of paper folded like an accordion and laid in a box. Carson opens up Catullus's poem 101, which the Roman poet wrote at his own brother's grave, one word at a time. On one side stands a dictionary entry for each Latin word, and on the other fragments of letters, photographs and memory. In this book translating and mourning are one act.

She did the same with drama. She has translated Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides, and in "Antigonick" she wrote out Sophocles' "Antigone" by hand beside drawings by Bianca Stone. She called "The Beauty of the Husband", the story of a marriage coming apart, a fictional essay in 29 tangos, and it won the T. S. Eliot Prize. The pictures in "Wrong Norma", her 2024 book and winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award, are her own. Carson has said she wrote very little until her twenties because she drew.

That brings us to the second question. How does Carson make new forms without breaking from tradition? She does not stand outside it. She knows Greek, she knows meter, she writes commentary. She comes so close to the old word that it finds a new place in today's language. The Swedish Academy locates her work at the same point, where a philologist's obsession with words meets a poet's desire for new meaning.

Persian readers know this kind of figure. In this same issue we write about Shafiei Kadkani, who is both a poet and the editor of Rumi's ghazals. Persian poetry itself moved forward for centuries by answering the poems of earlier masters and quoting their lines inside new ones. Carson has taken the same road in English, with one difference. Her texts reached her in pieces, and she has kept the tears.

New Directions, her publisher for thirty years, has two more books on the way. One is a book-length essay due in February 2027, and the other an art book that folds out like "Nox". For anyone looking for a place to begin, "Autobiography of Red" and "Nox" are two good doors.

آن کارسون، شاعری که مرزهای ادبیات را درنوردید

نوبل ادبیات ۲۰۲۶ برای شاعری که مدرس ادبیات یونان باستان است

نوشتهٔ Owrang Editorial

«The Beauty of the Husband»، روایت فروپاشی یک زناشویی، را مقاله‌ای داستانی در بیست و نه تانگو نامید و با آن T. S. Eliot Prize را گرفت.
