Manahil Tahira's MUBI Notebook essay traces how love and eroticism have been shown in Pakistani cinema, through Nazrul Islam's Aina (1977) and its two remakes, Sangeeta's Nikah (1998) and Sarmad Khoosat's Aaina (2013). In Aina the kiss is almost entirely absent, and intimacy is carried by romantic duets, the flower-covered marital bed, light, fabric, moisture, and gestures cut short before contact. Tahira argues that this absence owes less to Muslim sensibilities than to codes of respectability inherited from pre-Partition colonial India and reinforced by successive censor boards. Aina won 12 Nigar Awards including Best Film and ran in cinemas for a record 401 weeks, a run that continued well into the years of General Zia-ul-Haq, who overthrew Zulfikar Ali Bhutto in 1977 and later had him executed. From this Tahira concludes that the familiar story of an abrupt shift from a liberal 1970s to total repression is too simple, and that the change was uneven rather than absolute. Nikah restaged the same story in the 1990s with more open sexual display, while folding in more patriarchal values and placing the blame entirely on the wife. The 2013 television version went another way, since Pakistani television is policed far more tightly than cinema by the regulator PEMRA. There intimacy gave way to a polished, consumable image; the film was one of six remade with backing from a tea whitener brand whose logo sits on the title card itself. With the romantic duet now gone, Tahira writes, Pakistani cinema has still not found a new language for getting past censorship. The kiss is still missing, and so are the possibilities that once stood in for it.
