In an essay by Alisha Mughal, RogerEbert.com returns to the classic comedy Silent Movie by Mel Brooks on its fiftieth anniversary. The film is about a director named Mel Funn, played by Brooks himself in his first leading role. Along with his two faithful friends, he tries to make a film so successful that it will save their studio from being swallowed by a commercial company called Engulf and Devour. The comic twist is that Funn wants to make a true, old-fashioned silent film in the 1970s. He convinces the studio head that if big movie stars appear as themselves in the film, the fans of each will come to the theater to see them. In this way, actors such as Burt Reynolds, James Caan, Anne Bancroft, Liza Minnelli, Marcel Marceau, and Paul Newman join the film. Mughal notes that the story behind the making of the film was, in reality, much like its screenplay. Brooks wrote in his autobiography that when he pitched the idea to Alan Ladd Jr., the then-head of Twentieth Century Fox, Ladd responded in a way that resembled the studio chief in the film itself. Brooks had shortly before made Young Frankenstein for Fox in black and white, something considered unconventional in 1974. Ladd joked that now that Brooks had taken away color and wanted to take away sound as well, he wondered what else Brooks would remove. In the end, Brooks won him over. According to Mughal, Brooks's motivation was to pay tribute to the masters of silent comedy, from Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, and Harold Lloyd to Mack Sennett and the Keystone Kops, performers whose work he had grown up with in Brooklyn. He wanted both to honor this film genre and to affectionately poke fun at it. Brooks preserved the vocabulary of silent cinema. He used intertitles instead of dialogue, drew on the emotional score of John Morris, and leaned on physical comedy and repeated chase scenes. But alongside these he added his own touches. One of his goals after the great success of Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein was to bring two kinds of audiences along at once: those who catch the film references and those who recognize none of them but go along with the jokes and the situations. For this reason, Brooks built the story on the eternal battle between art and money. In the 1970s, large corporations with no experience in cinema were buying up studios and saw film mainly as a way to get close to stars and attend awards ceremonies. The name of the film's fictional company, Engulf and Devour, itself points to this devouring outlook. Mughal writes that in the world of this film, studio heads make the creation of art possible by giving artists money, yet they are not artists themselves and do not know what truly connects with people. The studio's motto makes this outlook plain: art is money. Like many of Brooks's films, this one mocks power, portraying it as hypocritical, out of touch, and absurd. In Mughal's view, the secret to the lasting power of Silent Movie lies in this very outlook. What Brooks says about the soullessness of commercial institutions and the incompatibility of money and power with genuine art has not faded. She reminds us that a good joke can cross the borders of culture, language, and time and still make us laugh. Perhaps this is why Silent Movie far exceeded expectations at its first release, earning nearly nine times its budget. A film that was meant to take a risk became itself one of the living examples of silent cinema surviving within modern comedy
