Coming of Age in Florida’s Turbulent Waters

⚡ Electric Literature · July 19, 2026 · Owrang Weekly #12

In this interview, Sam Risak speaks with Arielle Hebert about Bottom Feeders, her debut poetry collection. The book presents a queer coming-of-age story set in late-2000s Florida during the height of the opioid epidemic. Beach parties, teenage desire, and long summer nights appear alongside overdoses, hurricanes, red tide, addiction, and recovery. Hebert moves beyond simplified and tourist-friendly images of Florida to portray a place shaped by beauty, danger, grief, and memory. Water, heat, humidity, and the state’s wildlife are not merely a backdrop. They become part of the speakers’ emotional lives and their fear of being forgotten.
