Amir Reza Koohestani’s ‘Blind Runner’ opens in California, directed from afar after visa refusals

Blind Runner, the Persian-language play written and directed by Iranian theatre-maker Amir Reza Koohestani, opens its West Coast premiere at South Coast Repertory in Costa Mesa, California, on October 18 and runs until November 8. Developed by the Paris-based Mehr Theatre Group and first staged in Brussels in 2023, the hour-long piece follows a man whose wife is imprisoned for political activism and who agrees to guide Parisa, a young woman blinded during the 2022 protests, on a run through the Channel Tunnel. Ainaz Azarhoush plays both women, live cameras and projections shift what the audience sees, and the Persian text is surtitled in English. As Culture OC reports, US visa restrictions stopped the Iranian members of the company from travelling, so Koohestani is directing remotely by Zoom, with associate director Diana Fathi in the rehearsal room, and New York-based actor Mohammad Aghebati takes over the role first played by Mohammad Reza Hosseinzadeh. Koohestani says the play has never been performed in Iran. At St. Ann's Warehouse in New York, 20 to 30 percent of the audience spoke Persian, and he expects Southern California's larger community to make the Costa Mesa run warmer still.

Wikimedia Commons.
