این کتاب مجموعهای پژوهشی است درباره تاریخنگاری تئاتر در جنوب جهانی از سال ۱۹۴۵ به بعد، که برپایه نتایج پروژه اروپایی «Developing Theatre» گردآوری شده است. فصلهای آن دیدگاههایی از آفریقا، آسیا، خاورمیانه، آمریکای لاتین و اروپای شرقی را در بر میگیرند و بررسی میکنند که چگونه بنیادهای خیریه آمریکایی، سازمانهای بینالمللی و جشنوارههای پانآفریکایی در جهانیشدن و نهادینهشدن هنرهای نمایشی در این مناطق نقش داشتهاند. رویکرد کتاب نهادمحور است و تاریخنگاری تئاتر را از زاویهای تازه مینگرد.
