About this work
The Cathay poems appeared in a slim volume in 1915. They are, in effect, Ezra Pound’s English translations/interpretations from notebooks written by the Japanese scholar Ernest Fenollosa. Pound, not knowing any Chinese or Japanese at all, promptly created a new and somewhat complex style of translation, as he had done with words from several other languages. کاتای مجموعهای از ترجمههای شعری است که ازرا پاوند در سال ۱۹۱۵ منتشر کرد. پاوند این اشعار را نه از روی متن اصلی چینی یا ژاپنی، بلکه بر اساس یادداشتهای محقق ژاپنی ارنست فنولوسا به انگلیسی برگرداند، بدون آنکه خود هیچیک از این دو زبان را بداند. بیشتر اشعار این مجموعه سرودهی شاعر چینی لی پو است که در این ترجمهها با نام ژاپنیاش ریهاکو از او یاد میشود. پاوند در این کار شیوهی ترجمهای نو و پیچیدهای پدید آورد که در کارهای پیشین او با زبانهای دیگر نیز نمونههایی از آن دیده میشود.
