این مقاله به بررسی آثار چند شاعر، نمایشنامهنویس و رماننویس میپردازد که موضوع مشارکت ایرلندیها در جنگ جهانی اول را دستمایهٔ کار خود قرار دادهاند. محور اصلی بحث، دوگانگی وفاداری سربازان ایرلندی است که در ارتش بریتانیا میجنگیدند، در حالی که ایرلند همزمان برای خودمختاری تلاش میکرد و سرانجام در قیام عید پاک ۱۹۱۶ دست به شورشی ناامیدانه اما سرنوشتساز زد. مقاله این پرسش بنیادی را پیش میکشد که آیا ادبیات میتواند جهان را تغییر دهد، و در این راستا رویکرد ییتس را که شاعر را به سکوت متکبرانه در زمان جنگ فرامیخواند در برابر موضعگیریهای دیگر نویسندگان میسنجد.
