About this work
According to Judith Mackrell in the Guardian, Odette here is a naive young bride married off to Siegfried with both families' blessing, but Siegfried is gay and, in a homophobic society, cannot be with Odile, the man he loves. According to Robert Everett-Green in the Globe and Mail, the show opens with a comic bluffer's guide to ballet, Odette tries in vain to seduce her reluctant prince, and the corps publicly shames Siegfried for being gay. Both critics describe an ending of mourning in long black skirts; Everett-Green adds that the dancers collapse one by one as AIDS ravages the community. Tchaikovsky's music is mixed with pieces by Steve Reich, Arvo Pärt and Saint-Saëns.
