About this work

According to Wikipedia, Phèdre, wife of Theseus, is consumed in his absence by a forbidden love for her stepson Hippolytus; when news of Theseus's death arrives she confesses it, to Hippolytus's horror. Theseus returns alive, and her nurse Oenone accuses Hippolytus of attempting to force her. Theseus banishes and curses his son, calling on Neptune for revenge. Learning that Hippolytus loves Aricia, Phèdre stays silent from jealousy; Hippolytus dies when a sea monster panics his chariot horses, Oenone throws herself into the waves, and Phèdre confesses the truth and dies by poison.

به نوشتهٔ ویکی‌پدیا، فدر، همسر تزه، در غیاب شوهرش گرفتار عشقی ممنوع به ناپسری‌اش هیپولیت است و چون خبر مرگ تزه می‌رسد، عشقش را به او اعتراف می‌کند و هیپولیت هراسان می‌شود. تزه زنده بازمی‌گردد و اونون، دایهٔ فدر، به هیپولیت تهمت تجاوز می‌زند. تزه پسرش را تبعید و نفرین می‌کند و از نپتون انتقامش را می‌خواهد. فدر که می‌فهمد هیپولیت آریسی را دوست دارد، از حسادت خاموش می‌ماند؛ هیپولیت با ارابه‌اش در برابر هیولایی دریایی کشته می‌شود، اونون خود را به امواج می‌سپارد و فدر پس از اعتراف به حقیقت با زهر می‌میرد.
