According to Wikipedia, Filumena, a former prostitute who has lived for years with the wealthy Neapolitan shopkeeper Domenico Soriano, pretends to be dying to trick him into a deathbed marriage, then rises from her bed and sends away the young woman he meant to marry. Her aim is to have her three sons, who do not know who their mother is, legitimised. Domenico has the marriage annulled, but before leaving she tells him that one of the three is his own child, without saying which. Ten months later, having failed to find out, Domenico marries her again and accepts all three as his sons.
به نوشتهٔ ویکی‌پدیا، فیلومنا، روسپی پیشینی که سال‌ها با دومنیکو سوریانو، بازرگان ثروتمند ناپلی، زندگی کرده، خود را در حال مرگ جا می‌زند تا او را به ازدواج بر بستر مرگ وادارد، و همین که عقد بسته می‌شود از بستر برمی‌خیزد و دختر جوانی را که دومنیکو قصد ازدواج با او را داشت بیرون می‌کند. انگیزه‌اش این است که سه پسرش، که هویت مادر خود را نمی‌دانند، به‌رسمیت شناخته شوند. دومنیکو ازدواج را از راه قانون باطل می‌کند، اما فیلومنا پیش از رفتن به او می‌گوید یکی از آن سه پسر فرزند خود اوست و نمی‌گوید کدام. ده ماه بعد، دومنیکو که نتوانسته پسرش را پیدا کند، دوباره با فیلومنا ازدواج می‌کند و هر سه را فرزند خود می‌پذیرد.
