About this work
Nino Rota's score for Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather (1972) rests on three themes: the waltz with its solo trumpet, the love theme and Michael's theme. According to Filmtracks, Rota joins Sicilian mandolin and accordion to a symphonic orchestra and borrows from his earlier work, including the music for Fortunella. According to Classical Music, the Academy withdrew the score's nomination for that reason, and Rota won the Oscar two years later for The Godfather Part II.
