About this work

Giulio Cesare in Egitto is Handel's three-act opera seria, first performed at the King's Theatre, London, on 20 February 1724 with Senesino and Francesca Cuzzoni, and an immediate success. Loosely based on events of the Roman Civil War, it follows Caesar's clash with Tolomeo and his alliance with Cleopatra, alongside the revenge sought by Cornelia and her son Sesto for the murder of Pompey. David McVicar's 2005 Glyndebourne production under William Christie, with Sarah Connolly and Danielle de Niese, is among the best-known modern stagings and has returned repeatedly.
