Eyes Without a Face
Author: Georges Franju · 1960
About this work
Dr Génessier, an eminent surgeon, hides his daughter Christiane, her face destroyed in a car crash, behind a mask in his house while everyone believes her dead. With his assistant he abducts young women and removes their facial skin to graft onto her, until Christiane frees the next victim and the laboratory animals, and the dogs kill her father. According to Catherine Wheatley in Senses of Cinema, responses at release ranged from condescending to hostile, and reassessment began with the film's 1986 re-release.
