About this work

Zachariah, a Zulu man, leaves his famine-struck village for the gold mines of Johannesburg and is caught in Sophiatown by a loop of apartheid law: no pass without a job, no job without a pass. Pushed from one job to another, he is joined by his wife Vinah, who is killed by a local gangster after he is arrested. Shot in secret in South Africa with a nonprofessional cast, the film features the singer Miriam Makeba and won the Italian Critics Award at the Venice Film Festival.
