About this work

Iskandar, a former soldier of Indonesia's independence revolution, returns after the war to Bandung and the home of his fiancée Norma, but cannot find a place in civilian life. He learns that his former commander Gunawan had a family killed, by Iskandar's own hand, in order to take their wealth; he shoots Gunawan and, pursued by patrols in a city under curfew, is killed at Norma's door. The film shared Best Picture at the 1955 Indonesian Film Festival, and its restoration screened in Cannes Classics in 2012.
