About this work

This album holds two long honkyoku, the Zen solo repertoire for the bamboo shakuhachi flute in the Kinko style, played by Gorō Yamaguchi: Sokaku Reibo (Depicting the Cranes in Their Nest) and Kokū Reibo (A Bell Ringing in the Empty Sky). Yamaguchi recorded it during his 1967–68 residency at Wesleyan University, and Nonesuch issued it in 1969 in its Explorer Series as H-72025. It was among the first shakuhachi recordings in the United States; in 1977 NASA chose the Cranes piece for the Voyager Golden Record, and in 1992 Japan named Yamaguchi a Living National Treasure.
