About this work

Trilogie de la Mort is a roughly three-hour electronic work by the French composer Éliane Radigue, made entirely with an ARP analogue synthesizer and tape and widely regarded as her masterpiece. Its three parts, Kyema (Intermediate States, premiered in San Francisco in 1988), Kailasha (New York, 1991) and Koumé (Nice, 1993), draw on the Bardo Thödol, the 'Tibetan Book of the Dead', and on her Buddhist meditation practice, and were made in years marked by the deaths of her teacher and her son. The music consists of quiet sustained tones that drift very slowly into one another, revealing their inner harmonics. The whole trilogy was recorded at the CIRM studio in Nice in 1993 and released as a three-CD set by XI Records, New York, in 1998.
