About this work

Brilliant Corners is jazz pianist and composer Thelonious Monk's third album for Riverside and his first on the label built mainly on his own compositions; produced by Orrin Keepnews, it was recorded in three sessions in October and December 1956 with two quintets and released in 1957. The players include Sonny Rollins (tenor sax), Ernie Henry (alto sax), Clark Terry (trumpet), Oscar Pettiford and Paul Chambers (bass) and Max Roach (drums); Monk also plays celesta on Pannonica and takes I Surrender, Dear as a piano solo. The title piece, with its unusual form and tempo shifts, proved so hard that after 25 incomplete takes the released version was edited together from several of them.
