About this work

Sheida Gharachedaghi, one of the few prominent women composers of her generation and trained in Vienna, scored Mohammad Reza Aslani's Chess of the Wind (1976), a film about the decay of a Qajar family that was screened only once before the 1979 revolution and then banned; its negative was found in a Tehran junk shop in 2014. Composed music appears only in the opening credits and three murder scenes: reeds and flutes, prepared piano and the sheypour horn, atonal in colour, close to naghareh-khaneh music and drawing on Bushehri mourning music that Aslani had sent the composer. The 2024 Mississippi Records album is a new reworking that Aslani, Gharachedaghi and Gita Aslani Shahrestani built from this music and the sound of Aslani's 1974 short Therefore Hangs a Tale.
