About this work

Blue Maqams is an album by the Tunisian oud player and composer Anouar Brahem, recorded in May 2017 at Avatar Studios, New York, produced by Manfred Eicher and released on 13 October 2017 as ECM 2580. Brahem leads a quartet with Dave Holland (double bass), Jack DeJohnette (drums) and Django Bates (piano); all nine pieces are his own, most built on Arab maqam modes. According to The Guardian, Bates joined at Eicher's suggestion, Brahem never having heard him before; the record joins melodic Mediterranean song forms with jazz improvisation.
