About this work
Op. 131 is the last of the three string quartets Beethoven wrote in succession near the end of his life, completed in 1826: a work of about 45 minutes in seven movements played without a break, opening with a slow, grieving fugue. The finale brings back the fugue's theme, a kind of cyclic integration that was new for its time. Beethoven considered it his favourite of the late quartets, and he died before its publication by Schott (1827) and before its first performance, whose date is uncertain. Among its landmark recordings is the Busch Quartet's 1936 account made at Abbey Road, London.
کوارتت زهی اپوس ۱۳۱ آخرینِ سه کوارتتی است که بتهوون در سال‌های پایانی عمر پشت سر هم نوشت و آن را در ۱۸۲۶ به پایان برد؛ اثری حدود چهل‌وپنج دقیقه‌ای در هفت موومان که بی‌وقفه نواخته می‌شوند و با فوگی آرام و غمگین آغاز می‌شود. موومان پایانی تم همان فوگ آغازین را دوباره به میان می‌آورد و همین پیوند درونی، برای زمان خود نوآورانه بود. بتهوون آن را محبوب‌ترین کوارتت پایانی خود می‌دانست و پیش از چاپ آن به دست انتشارات شوت (۱۸۲۷) و پیش از نخستین اجرایش، که تاریخ آن روشن نیست، درگذشت. از ضبط‌های شاخص آن، ضبط ۱۹۳۶ کوارتت بوش در استودیوی ابی رود لندن است.
