About this work

This Korean adaptation drops Theseus, Hippolyta and Egeus and turns Shakespeare's fairies into dokkebi, the mischievous goblins of Korean folklore. According to Alexandra Coghlan in The Arts Desk, Oberon and Titania become Gabi and Dot, king and queen of the dokkebi, Puck becomes the twin brothers Duduri, and Lysander and Hermia are renamed Hang and Beok. Bottom gives way to Ajumi, an old herb-gatherer who, according to InKo Centre, searches the forest for a thousand-year-old ginseng root, and, Coghlan reports, this time the love spell falls on the king and a pig replaces the ass. Two pairs of lovers lose their way in the night forest and the dokkebi's tricks swap their affections until the spell breaks at dawn. Performed in Korean with dance, song, mime and live percussion, it played on 30 April and 1 May 2012 at Shakespeare's Globe, London, in the Globe to Globe festival.
