About this work
Water puppetry is a village art of Vietnam's Red River Delta that, according to Wikipedia, dates back to the 11th century. The stage is a waist-deep pool; the puppeteers stand hidden behind a split-bamboo screen and move lacquered wooden puppets with bamboo rods and underwater string mechanisms, while a traditional orchestra of drums, gongs, bamboo flutes and the dan bau monochord plays and cheo singers tell the story. The short scenes show village life, rice farming, fishing, festivals, legends and national history with humour, and a jester called Chu Teu comments on social issues and the corruption of officials. The Thang Long theatre beside Hoan Kiem Lake in Hanoi was founded, according to its official website, on 10 October 1969 and performs the art every day of the year.
