About this work
According to Wikipedia, Pa Ubu is often away from home and Ma Ubu suspects a mistress, but he is an agent of a state death squad and the smell on him is of blood and dynamite. After apartheid ends, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission is set up and offers amnesty to those who give full and truthful testimony; Ubu, suspecting a trick, wavers between hiding and confessing. According to Mark Fisher in the Guardian, he feeds his documents, tapes and instruments of torture to a paper-shredding crocodile, while real testimonies of victims are heard through puppets and Kentridge's animated drawings. The piece draws on Alfred Jarry's Ubu Roi and on the actual hearings of South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
