About this work

The Youngers, a three-generation Black family, live in a cramped apartment on Chicago's South Side, and after the father's death a $10,000 life-insurance cheque arrives. According to Michael Billington, Lena, the mother, wants to help her daughter Beneatha through medical school and puts a deposit on a house in a white neighbourhood, while her son Walter Lee dreams of buying a liquor store. The white residents offer the family money not to move in, and Walter entrusts most of the money to a partner who vanishes with it. The family faces this loss and in the end refuses to give in to pressure and prejudice. According to Playbill, the first production, with Sidney Poitier, Ruby Dee, Claudia McNeil and Diana Sands, opened on 11 March 1959 at Broadway's Ethel Barrymore Theatre and was the first play by a Black woman produced on Broadway.
