About this work
According to ClassiCult's introduction, the story is set in ancient India: two branches of cousins in one royal house, the Kauravas led by Duryodhana, son of the blind king Dhritarashtra, and the Pandavas led by the righteous Yudhishthira, fight over the throne, and jealousy and betrayal drive them into a war that threatens the balance of the universe. Jean-Claude Carrière's play tells the Sanskrit epic in three parts, The Game of Dice, The Exile in the Forest and The War, over about nine hours. Peter Brook's production opened on 7 July 1985 in the Boulbon quarry outside Avignon with 21 performers from 16 countries and musicians including Djamchid Chemirani and Mahmoud Tabrizi-zadeh; it toured the world for four years and was filmed in 1989.
