About this work

The play draws on an episode of the Mahabharata (the Drona Parva): the killing of Abhimanyu, Arjuna's young son, by seven Kaurava warriors inside the wheel-shaped battle formation called the chakravyuha. According to Erin B. Mee in American Theatre, elegantly robed, soft-spoken generals push the young man into false heroism and send him into a battle where they know he will die; Abhimanyu remembers hearing, in his mother's womb, his father describe how to enter the formation, but his mother fell asleep before the way out was told. At the end he speaks from the battlefield and condemns the powerful kings and rulers of the world. Thiyam staged the myth with Manipuri martial and ritual arts (thang-ta, nata sankirtana, pena singing).
