About this work

In a Ukrainian village during the collectivisation of farming, the old peasant Semyon dies peacefully beneath an apple tree. His grandson Vasyl brings the village its first tractor, the fields are ploughed and the rich landowners' (kulaks') fences come down; but one night Vasyl is killed on his way home by a kulak's son, and his father turns away the priest and asks for his son to be buried with new songs. The film premiered on 8 April 1930 and was pulled from screens days later; at the 1958 Brussels World Expo critics' poll it was named among the twelve best films ever made.
