About this work
Wayang kulit is Javanese shadow theatre: a master puppeteer, the dalang, sits behind a lit screen, moves flat, jointed leather puppets on rods, voices every character and narrates episodes from the Ramayana, the Mahabharata and local history, accompanied by a gamelan orchestra and singers. A performance usually lasts all night, and clown servants who stand for ordinary people break into the story to comment on current affairs. According to UNESCO's page, the form flourished for about ten centuries at the courts of Java and Bali and in the villages, and was proclaimed a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2003. The featured performance is the lakon Banjaran Setyaki by the renowned dalang Ki Purbo Asmoro, a lecturer at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts in Surakarta.
وایانگ کولیت نمایش سایه‌ی جاوه است: یک استادِ عروسک‌گردان به نام «دالانگ» پشت پرده‌ای روشن، عروسک‌های چرمیِ تخت و مفصل‌دار را با میله حرکت می‌دهد، به جای همه‌ی شخصیت‌ها حرف می‌زند و قصه‌هایی از رامایانا، مهابهاراتا و تاریخ محلی را روایت می‌کند، در حالی که ارکستر گاملان و خوانندگان او را همراهی می‌کنند. اجرا معمولاً تمام شب طول می‌کشد و دلقک‌هایی که نماینده‌ی مردم عادی‌اند، در میانه‌ی قصه به مسائل روز طعنه می‌زنند. به نوشته‌ی صفحه‌ی یونسکو، این هنر حدود ده قرن در درباره‌ای جاوه و بالی و در روستاها شکوفا بوده و در ۲۰۰۳ به‌عنوان شاهکار میراث شفاهی و ناملموس بشر اعلام شد. اجرای برگزیده‌ی این کارت، «بانجاران ستیاکی» با دالانگ نامدار کی پوربو اسمورو، استاد مؤسسه‌ی هنر اندونزی در سوراکارتاست.
