About this work
Woyzeck, a poor soldier who shaves his captain, earns a few extra coins by taking part in a doctor's experiment that feeds him only on peas. The Captain humiliates him, and Marie, the mother of his child, turns to the swaggering Drum Major, who beats Woyzeck. Under these pressures his mind gives way and he stabs Marie by a pond. Büchner wrote the play in 1836–37 and left it unfinished at his death; according to Wikipedia it was first staged on 8 November 1913 at the Residenztheater in Munich.
