About this work
Theatre of the Oppressed is a family of theatre techniques devised by the Brazilian director Augusto Boal to turn passive spectators into "spect-actors". In forum theatre a short scene of everyday oppression is played once, then replayed while audience members may stop it, replace the oppressed character and try out another course of action on stage, guided by a facilitator called the Joker; in image theatre participants silently sculpt one another into statues of a situation. According to Wikipedia, Boal developed the method after his arrest and exile in 1971, drawing on Paulo Freire's Pedagogy of the Oppressed, and on returning to Brazil in 1986 founded the Centre for the Theatre of the Oppressed in Rio de Janeiro.
تئاتر ستمدیدگان مجموعه‌ای از شیوه‌های نمایشی است که آگوستو بوآل، کارگردان برزیلی، پدید آورد تا تماشاگر از نظاره‌گرِ خاموش به «تماشاگر-بازیگر» بدل شود. در «تئاتر فوروم» صحنه‌ای کوتاه از ستمی روزمره اجرا می‌شود و در اجرای دوم، تماشاگران می‌توانند نمایش را متوقف کنند، جای شخصیتِ ستمدیده را بگیرند و راه دیگری را روی صحنه بیازمایند؛ «جوکر» این گفت‌وگو را هدایت می‌کند. در «تئاتر تصویر» شرکت‌کنندگان بی‌کلام و با بدن یکدیگر تندیس‌هایی از یک وضعیت می‌سازند. بنا بر ویکی‌پدیا، بوآل پس از بازداشت و تبعید در ۱۹۷۱ این روش را با الهام از «آموزش ستمدیدگان» پائولو فریره در آمریکای جنوبی پرورد و پس از بازگشت به برزیل در ۱۹۸۶ مرکز تئاتر ستمدیدگان را در ریو بنیاد گذاشت.
