About this work
Kathakali ('story-play') is the classical dance-drama of Kerala in south India. Singers chant the text and chenda and maddalam drums play, while elaborately made-up and costumed actors play the story without words, through hand gestures (mudras) and movements of the eyes and face. Face colour marks the character type: green for noble heroes, red and black for villains. Most plays come from the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. In the 18th-century Nalacharitam, King Nala falls in love with Damayanti through a golden swan, loses everything at dice under the god Kali's spell, abandons his wife in the forest, and is reunited with her years later. According to Wikipedia, the fully developed form emerged around the 16th century, and performances once ran from dusk to dawn.
