About this work
San Francisco detective John 'Scottie' Ferguson retires with a fear of heights after a rooftop chase in which a fellow officer falls to his death. An old college acquaintance hires him to follow his wife Madeleine, who seems possessed by a long-dead woman; Scottie falls in love with her, but his fear stops him from saving her at the top of a mission bell tower. Later he spots a woman on the street who reminds him of Madeleine. Mixed reviews greeted its release, but in the 2012 Sight and Sound poll it replaced Citizen Kane as the greatest film ever made.
