About this work
This short documentary was made ten years after the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps. Alternating between new colour footage of the abandoned grounds of Auschwitz and Majdanek and black-and-white archive images, it traces the rise of Nazism, the building of the camps, the lives and deaths of prisoners, and finally liberation and the question of who was responsible. The narration was written by Jean Cayrol, a survivor of Mauthausen-Gusen, with music by Hanns Eisler; the film won the 1956 Jean Vigo Prize.
