About this work

In a sweltering summer in Salta, northwestern Argentina, the middle-aged Mecha drinks wine with her husband and children beside a filthy pool at their decaying estate, La Mandrágora. She falls drunk and injures herself, and her cousin Tali comes from town with her own children. Over listless days the children go hunting with guns, the adults accuse an Indigenous maid of stealing, and television news reports sightings of the Virgin Mary on rooftops, until an accident shakes everyone. Martel's first feature won the Alfred Bauer Prize at Berlin and was named the greatest Argentine film in a 2022 critics' poll.
