Boris Godunov
Author: Modest Mussorgsky (composer and libretto, after Pushkin) · 1874
About this work
Boris Godunov is Modest Mussorgsky's only completed opera and his masterpiece, based on Alexander Pushkin's 1825 historical drama. It follows Boris Godunov, who became Tsar during Russia's Time of Troubles; guilt over the murder of the child heir haunts him, the rise of the False Dmitriy shakes his rule, and the Russian people are a strong presence throughout. The original 1869 version was rejected by the Imperial Theatres, and the revised 1872 version premiered on 27 January 1874 (Old Style) at the Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg to great public success. Rimsky-Korsakov and Shostakovich later made their own orchestrations, but Mussorgsky's own versions are now preferred.
