About this work

Mingus Ah Um is the bassist-composer Charles Mingus's first album for Columbia, recorded in May 1959 at the label's 30th Street Studio in New York with producer Teo Macero and released that autumn. Its pieces pay tribute to jazz forebears: "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" mourns Lester Young, "Open Letter to Duke" salutes Ellington and "Bird Calls" nods to Charlie Parker, while "Better Git It in Your Soul" draws on gospel singing and preaching, and "Fables of Faubus" targets the Arkansas governor Orval Faubus; Columbia refused its lyrics, so it was issued as an instrumental. The eight-piece band features saxophonists John Handy, Booker Ervin and Shafi Hadi, trombonists Jimmy Knepper and Willie Dennis, Horace Parlan (piano) and Dannie Richmond (drums).
