About this work

Zemestan Ast is the live recording of the first concert by the group later billed abroad as the Masters of Persian Music: Mohammad-Reza Shajarian, Hossein Alizadeh, Kayhan Kalhor and Homayoun Shajarian. The concert was performed and recorded live in California in early 2001 (Iranian year 1379), and the album was released in Iran in 2001. The whole programme is in the mode Dad-o Bidad, which Alizadeh devised by joining the gusheh Dad from Mahur with Bidad from Homayun; after an opening instrumental reng, the singing on Akhavan-Sales's poem Winter runs to the end, with improvised rhythmic pieces in between. The poem, written after the 1953 coup, took on a protest meaning for many listeners in this performance.
