About this work

Wozzeck is Alban Berg's first opera, written between 1914 and 1922 on Georg Büchner's unfinished play Woyzeck. A poor soldier, humiliated by his Captain and used in experiments by the regimental Doctor, slides into madness, kills Marie, the mother of his child, and drowns in a pond. Berg built each scene on a traditional musical form such as a suite, passacaglia or fugue, in an atonal, expressionist language. The premiere on 14 December 1925 at the Berlin State Opera under Erich Kleiber was a succès de scandale, yet the work became a cornerstone of twentieth-century modernist opera.
