St Matthew Passion, BWV 244
Author: Johann Sebastian Bach (composer) · Picander (libretto) · 1727
About this work
The St Matthew Passion is J. S. Bach's sacred oratorio for soloists, double choir and double orchestra, setting chapters 26 and 27 of Matthew's Gospel in Luther's translation, with chorales and arias on verse by Picander. It was probably first performed on Good Friday, 11 April 1727, at St Thomas Church in Leipzig, and Bach revised it later. It was not heard outside Leipzig until 1829, when the twenty-year-old Felix Mendelssohn conducted a shortened version with the Berlin Sing-Akademie, a revival that brought Bach's large works back to public and scholarly attention. The Netherlands Bach Society has performed it every year in the Grote Kerk of Naarden since 1922.
