About this work

Newspaper magnate Charles Foster Kane dies at his estate, Xanadu, with the word 'Rosebud' on his lips. A reporter interviews Kane's friends and associates to find out what it means, and their accounts build a portrait of a man whose ambition cost him two marriages and a political career; the characters never solve the riddle, but the final shot shows the audience the answer. Welles's first feature, co-written with Herman J. Mankiewicz (they shared the Oscar for Original Screenplay), topped five straight Sight and Sound polls from 1962 to 2002 and placed third in 2022.
