About this work
Ali, a nine-year-old boy from a poor south Tehran neighborhood, loses his sister Zahra's freshly mended shoes. To keep it from their struggling parents, the two share Ali's worn sneakers in shifts, Zahra in the morning and Ali in the afternoon, with breathless runs between school and home. Ali finally enters a children's race because third prize is a pair of shoes. It was the first Iranian film nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film (1999 ceremony).
