این مقاله به بررسی مفهوم هویت در برخی داستان‌های کوتاه دونالد بارتلمی می‌پردازد. نویسنده برای تحلیل این موضوع از آرای لویی آلتوسر، از جمله مفاهیم دستگاه‌های ایدئولوژیک دولتی، فراخوانش و ایدئولوژی بهره می‌گیرد. بر اساس این رویکرد، هویت همانند ایدئولوژی از طریق نهادهایی چون خانواده، دین، سیاست، آموزش و رسانه شکل می‌گیرد. مقاله به‌ویژه تأثیر رسانه، آموزش و ارتش را در داستان‌های بارتلمی واکاوی می‌کند و نشان می‌دهد این نهادها چگونه هویت شخصیت‌ها را می‌سازند.
