About this work

Mephisto wagers with an archangel that he can corrupt a righteous man and so win the earth. He sends a plague to the town of the old alchemist Faust, who in despair signs a pact, regains his youth and chases pleasure. Faust falls for the innocent Gretchen, but Mephisto's schemes bring her brother's death, her disgrace and the death of her baby in the snow, and she is sentenced to burn. Old again, Faust throws himself into the fire beside her, and love wins the wager.
