About this work

Night, Silence, Desert is a suite of pieces by Kayhan Kalhor that merges Iran's classical dastgah music with the regional maqam music of northern Khorasan, with the singing in Dashti. The instrumental tracks were recorded in 1994, Mohammad-Reza Shajarian's vocals and the editing followed in 1997, and the album was released in Iran in 1998; Traditional Crossroads issued it in the US in September 2000. Alongside Shajarian and Kalhor, the players include Ardavan and Bijan Kamkar, Hossein Behroozinia and the Khorasani dotar master Haj Ghorban Soleimani, and the texts range from Baba Taher and Attar to Houshang Ebtehaj and Mohammad-Ali Mo'allem. It was reissued in 2017 as part of a selected-works series of Kalhor's recordings.
